GROUND SQUIRREL
(Spermophilus beecheyi)

HABITAT:  They can be found in a wide range of habitats—urban, suburban, agricultural, open areas, rocky areas.  Lives on the ground and in burrows (underground caves).

DIET: The ground squirrel mostly eats seeds, but also eats fruits, insects, roots, bulbs, and fungi.

PREDATORS: Their main predators are red-tailed hawks, rattlesnakes, coyotes, dogs, and house cats.

FUN FACTS: These squirrels have cheek pouches for gathering and transporting food.  They sometimes live with several other ground squirrels in a burrow, and each squirrel has its very own entrance tunnel.   When frightened or being chased, these squirrels will often run directly to their entrance tunnel, even if it is not the closest one!
